How Packers and Movers Charges Are Calculated

How packers and movers charges are calculated with formula and quote lines
The cost formula behind a mover quote. Estimates, not a fixed quote.

Packers and movers charges are calculated by adding the main lines in a written quote, not one flat rate. Goods volume sets a baseline, then packing material, labour, transport and a floor or lift charge are added. GST is a separate line at 5 or 18 percent, and transit insurance is added only if it is opted in.

How are packers and movers charges calculated?

Packers and movers charges are calculated by adding the main lines in a written quote, not by one flat rate. Goods volume sets a baseline, then packing material, labour, transport and a floor or lift charge are added. GST is applied as a separate line, and transit insurance only if it is opted in.

The formula below is the same one our calculator uses, line by line, with a full worked example. For how we source and normalise data see the methodology page, and for the extras a low quote hides see hidden charges in packers and movers.

The moving cost formula

Every estimate follows one readable formula. Nothing is hidden inside a single number.

Total = Packing + Labour + Transport + Floor or lift, then add GST, and insurance if opted

Transport and labour together are about 60 to 70 percent of a typical bill, and packing plus add-ons make up the rest.

Line by line calculation

Each line has its own reason and its own working. This is what the calculator checks for you.

The main lines that add up to a quote
Goods volume
Packing
Labour
Transport
Building access
GST and cover
Final estimate

A complete quote shows every important line. If a quote skips one, it is not a fair comparison with another mover.

Main quote lines and how they are checked
Quote lineWhat changes itHow it is checked
Packing materialGoods volume in cubic feet and packing gradeVolume baseline times the packing-tier factor
Labour and handlingHome size, crew count and handling hoursCrew size times loading, carry and unloading time
TransportLocal truck slab, or distance for intercityLocal: one truck on a city route. Intercity: a per-km rate range times distance
Floor and liftFloor number and whether a service lift existsPer-floor rate scaled by home size, zero when a lift is available
GSTService type, full service or transport only5 percent transport only, 18 percent full service, on the subtotal
Transit insuranceDeclared goods value, optionalA small percentage of the declared goods value, only if opted in
SeasonalityMove date, month-end or peak seasonA separate surcharge line, never added into the base

Volume, labour and transport split

Goods volume in cubic feet sets the base. Labour and transport then dominate the bill, while packing and add-ons are the smaller share. This is why a short move can still cost a lot, the volume and crew do not shrink with distance.

How GST is applied

GST is a separate line on the subtotal, never added into the base. Check the service type because the GST rate is different for transport-only and full-service moves.

GST by service type
Service typeGST rateApplied on
Transport only5 percentVehicle and basic handling subtotal
Full service packing and moving18 percentPacking, labour, transport and handling subtotal
Vehicle transport, bike or car5 percentCarrier and handling subtotal

Seasonality and date effect

The move date changes the price through a visible surcharge line, so a month-end quote stays comparable to a mid-month one.

Date pattern and its pricing effect
Date patternEffectShown as
Month-end, 25th onwardAbout 20 to 30 percent higher demand pricingA separate month-end surcharge line
Peak summer, April to JuneAbout 10 to 20 percent higherA separate peak-season line
Mid-month weekdayLowest demand windowNo surcharge line

Local vs intercity formula difference

The main lines are similar, but transport is worked differently for a same-city move and a long route.

Budget, standard and premium tiers

The same formula produces three tiers by changing crew size and packing grade.

What each price tier means
TierWhat it means
BudgetLean crew and basic packing, the low end of the range
StandardNormal crew and standard packing, the usual mid range
PremiumLarger crew, premium packing and insurance, the high end

Volume sets the base

Goods volume in cubic feet, read from the home size, sets the packing and labour baseline before anything else is added.

Transport is slab or per km

A local move uses a city-truck slab. An intercity move uses a per-km rate range times the route distance. The two are computed differently.

Floor and lift are conditional

The floor line is zero when a service lift is available at both ends, and scales by floor count and home size when it is not.

GST is a separate line

GST is never added into the base. It is 5 percent for transport only and 18 percent for full service, shown as its own line.

Seasonality is explicit

Month-end and peak-season loading is a separate visible surcharge, so the base stays comparable across dates.

Insurance is opt-in

Transit insurance is a small percentage of declared goods value and is added only when the customer opts in.

The calculation, step by step

The full order the calculator follows.

  • Estimate goods volume from the home size in cubic feet
  • Add packing material by the chosen packing grade
  • Add labour by crew size and handling hours
  • Add transport, a local truck slab or a per-km intercity rate range
  • Add floor and lift charge only when there is no service lift
  • Add a seasonality line if the date is month-end or peak season
  • Add GST at 5 or 18 percent, and insurance only if opted in

How charges are calculated, FAQs

What is the formula to calculate packers and movers charges?

Total equals packing plus labour plus transport plus a floor or lift charge, then GST is added as a separate line, and transit insurance only if opted in. Goods volume in cubic feet sets the baseline before any head is added.

What share of the cost is transport and labour?

Transport and labour together are usually about 60 to 70 percent of a typical move bill. Ask the mover to show both lines separately, because a short move can still cost a lot when labour hours are high.

How is packing material cost calculated?

Packing material is calculated from goods volume in cubic feet and the packing grade. Ask for carton count, bubble wrap, foam, TV packing and crate items separately so premium packing is not added vaguely.

How is transport charge calculated for a move?

A local move uses a city-truck slab, while an intercity move uses a route distance calculation. Ask for truck size, shared or dedicated vehicle, tolls and delivery window in writing.

How is GST calculated on packers and movers?

GST is applied to the subtotal as a separate line. Full-service packing and moving is 18 percent, transport-only and vehicle transport are 5 percent. It is never hidden inside the base figure on an honest quote.

How is the floor or lift charge worked out?

The floor charge is a per-floor rate scaled by home size, applied only when there is no service lift. With a working lift at both ends the floor line is zero, which is why lift access lowers a quote.

How does the move date change the calculation?

The date adds a separate seasonality line. Month-end is about 20 to 30 percent higher and peak summer about 10 to 20 percent. Ask for weekday and month-end quotes separately before choosing the date.

How is insurance calculated in a moving quote?

Transit insurance is a small percentage of the declared goods value and is added only when you opt in. Share declared value, keep photos and ask for claim terms before paying for cover.

Why do budget, standard and premium estimates differ?

The same formula produces three tiers by changing crew size and packing grade. Compare quotes only after checking carton count, crew size, insurance and fragile packing, not just the final number.

Is a per-km rate enough to calculate a full move?

No. A per-km rate only covers the transport line. Packing, labour, floor charges, GST and insurance are computed separately, so a per-km figure alone is never the full calculated cost of a move.
